Quick Battle
Sometimes battles can take longer than is necessary. This slows things down and decreases the intensity of the experience. You're sitting there waiting for all the players to finish counting their dice. They're getting bored and frustrated and you're having trouble keeping track of how many stormtroopers are scattered on the ground and how many are still standing. Well here's a helpful technique that can speed things up to the way they would be depicted in a movie. It can save you time and frustration. 1) Each character rolls a 10-sided die for initiative instead of their perception. This cuts out the counting time. A six sided die could also be used but could have more people taking their turn at the same time than with a 10-sided die. 2) Write down each player's roll (and all GM characters' rolls) on a piece of paper or chalk or dry erase board as each announces their number. The players could also remember their numbers and figure it out amongst themselves who goes next. The GM could just say, "who's next?" 3) When a GM character takes a turn, roll for the action and the other players may do the same for their reactions. Just like in normal battle. 4) When a player's character takes a turn and a GM character is reacting, the GM sets a difficulty level and the player rolls for the action. The GM then judges based completely on that difficulty scale, rolling nothing for GM characters. 5) Strength is rolled as normal. |
